Natural Foods and Drinks to prevent from Seasonal Viral Infection


Ginger and Honey: Ginger has a warming impact on the body and is loaded with anti-inflammatory gingerols and shaogals that help relive a sore throat and drain the congestion, and is also kills rhinoviruses which causes cold and flu. On the other hand, Honey has ant-inflammatory properties and soothes sore throat and eases cough. Consuming a teaspoon of fresh ginger juice and honey daily can help prevent seasonal infections.

Garlic: It has allicin which has antibacterial and antifungal properties. Several studies have proved that people who regularly take garlic supplements are less likely to suffer from cold and flu than those who do not. Raw garlic works best and hence you must have one to two garlic cloves on an empty stomach for best results. Allicin in garlic also brings down cholesterol levels in the body.

Seasonal Green Vegetables: These vegetables are naturally warming and are loaded with nutrition that helps the body fight against seasonal infections. The more you consume colourful veggies, the more phytonutrients you get, and the more protection against cold and fever. You should have at least 3 – 4 servings of green vegetables during the week.

Tulsi and Black Pepper: Tulsi not only improves immunity but also cures cold and cough. It has also been a part of several Ayurvedic combinations in treating a number of other diseases such as – fever, dysentery, arthritis, dyspepsia , diarrhoea, vomiting, acidity, cardiac disorders, back pain, skin diseases etc. Black pepper is loaded with antibacterial and antibiotic properties as it is a rich source of immunity-boosting Vitamin C.

Boil one cup of water, add a pinch of crushed black pepper and some tulsi leaves. Sip the tea through the day. Alternately, you can also have 5 leaves of tulsi, 2 peppercorns and half a teaspoon of honey on an empty stomach first thing in the morning.

Amla: It is one of the richest sources of Vitamin C and one of the best foods to increase immunity. It also helps in obtaining clear skin and is good for better digestion too.

Turmeric Water:  Sip a glass of warm water with turmeric everyday in the morning. Make it your first drink. It is not just good for liver by flushing out toxins from the body, but is also believed to accelerate mucus production, which naturally flushes out microbes from the respiratory tract. Turmeric has antiviral and antibacterial properties which help in fighting any kind of infection in the body and its anti-inflammatory property helps in relieving the symptoms of cough and cold.
