Emirates Airline has planned to serve special Onam Sadhya meals for Keralites flying from 1st September to 13th September. During this time period, the airline will serve authentic Onam dishes across all cabin classes on all its flights to and from Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram. Emirates’ chefs and catering teams have designed delicious festive menus to provide Keralites with the authentic festive food by flying even at 40,000ft. The airline provides twice daily connectivity to Kochi and 11 times weekly to Thiruvananthapuram.
The food menu will have traditional appetizers such as – kaya varuthathu or crisp banana chips, sharkara upperi, banana roasted in jaggery, and kondatta mulaku (fried sundried chillies steeped in yoghurt). Dips such as – kaalan (made of coconut), fresh yoghurt and yam, cucumber pachadi, (garnished salad), and puli inji (sweet and tangy ginger-based chutney) will also be served. First and Business Class passengers will have an advantage to enjoy Kerala-style pappadam and mango pickles as well.
People travelling from Dubai to Kerala in an Economy class will have the choice among the two main food courses: Alleppey chicken curry or sambar and kootu, both paired with thoran and rice. First Class passengers will have one more additional main food course option – mutton pepper fry.
All meals will be served on banana leaves placed in trays and dish liners across all flights to give Keralites feel of a homely environment. For entertainment purpose, there will be a series of popular Malayalam movies and music to enjoy from.
Onam is the biggest and the most important festival of the state of Kerala. It is a harvest festival celebrated with joy and enthusiasm all over the state by people of all communities. The festival is celebrated to welcome King Mahabali, whose spirit is said to visit Kerala at the time of Onam.
